Also called: diabetes, thyroid and hormone specialist
Find a diabetologist or endocrinologist
A diabetologist specialises in diabetes. An endocrinologist treats diabetes and other hormone (gland) conditions: the thyroid, hormone problems linked to PCOS, growth and puberty, weak bones, and the adrenal and pituitary glands. Endocrinologists in India complete an MD in Medicine and then a DM or DNB in Endocrinology; many diabetologists are physicians with additional training in diabetes.

Good reasons to book a visit
- Feeling very thirsty, passing urine often, or losing weight without trying

- Frequent low sugars (hypos): shaking, sweating, sudden hunger or confusion

Get emergency help instead if you notice

What to bring to your visit
- Your glucometer, or a log of fasting and after-meal readings
- Recent HbA1c, kidney function, cholesterol and thyroid reports

Frequently asked questions
What is HbA1c?
A blood test that reflects your average blood sugar over the past two to three months. Your doctor sets a target for you and uses it to see how well treatment is working.
How often should I check my sugar at home?
It depends on your treatment. People on insulin usually check more often than people on tablets. Ask your doctor for a schedule, and bring your readings to every visit.
Can my general physician manage my diabetes?
Many people are well looked after by a general physician. A diabetologist or endocrinologist helps when sugar stays high, insulin needs adjusting, or complications appear.
Can a thyroid problem cause weight gain?
An underactive thyroid can contribute to weight gain and tiredness. A simple blood test (TSH) checks how your thyroid is working.
