Also called: brain and nerve specialist
Find a neurologist
A neurologist diagnoses and treats conditions of the brain, spinal cord and nerves: headaches and migraine, epilepsy, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, nerve pain and memory problems. Neurologists treat with medicines and other therapies; neurosurgeons are the surgeons for the same organs. Neurologists in India complete an MD in Medicine and then a DM or DNB in Neurology.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a neurologist and a neurosurgeon?
Both treat the brain, spine and nerves. A neurologist diagnoses and treats with medicines and other therapies; a neurosurgeon operates when surgery is needed. Many patients see a neurologist first.
When should I see a neurologist about headaches?
If they are frequent or severe, keep changing pattern, or come with weakness, numbness or changes in vision. A sudden, very severe headache needs emergency care straight away.
Why is a video of a seizure useful?
It shows the neurologist exactly what happened, which helps with diagnosis. Record only when it is safe: first make sure the person cannot hurt themselves.
What should I do if someone has a stroke?
Call 108 or 112 immediately and note the time the symptoms started. Some stroke treatments only work within hours of the first symptoms, so do not wait to see whether they settle.
