Also called: bone and joint specialist, orthopaedic surgeon

Find an orthopedic doctor (bone and joint specialist)

An orthopedic doctor (orthopaedic surgeon) treats bones, joints, muscles, ligaments and the spine: injuries such as fractures and sprains, and long-term problems such as arthritis and back pain. Many problems are treated without surgery. Orthopedic doctors in India hold an MS or DNB in Orthopaedics, or a D.Ortho.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an X-ray before seeing an orthopedic doctor?

Not necessarily. The doctor examines you first and orders an X-ray or MRI if it is needed. If you already have one, bring both the images and the written report.

When is back pain serious?

Most back pain gets better within a few weeks. See a doctor if it doesn’t, if it spreads down your leg, or if it wakes you at night. Weakness, numbness around the groin or problems passing urine need emergency care.

Is knee replacement the only treatment for knee arthritis?

No. Exercise, weight management, physiotherapy and medicines are usually tried first. Surgery is considered when these no longer control the pain or the knee limits daily life.

Should I see an orthopedic doctor or a physiotherapist first?

For a new injury or joint problem, see the doctor first for a diagnosis. Physiotherapy is often part of the treatment plan they recommend.

In an emergency, don’t wait for an appointment. Call 108 for an ambulance or 112 for any emergency.
