Psychiatrists can prescribe medicines and often work alongside psychologists, who provide talking therapies. Psychiatrists in India hold an MD or DNB in Psychiatry, or a DPM.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can diagnose conditions and prescribe medicines. A psychologist is trained in assessment and talking therapies but does not prescribe. Many people benefit from seeing both.

Is what I tell a psychiatrist kept confidential?

Yes. Doctors are bound by confidentiality, and India’s Mental Healthcare Act, 2017 gives people receiving mental health care a right to confidentiality.

Will I have to take medicines?

Not always. Treatment depends on the condition and how severe it is, and may include talking therapy, lifestyle changes, medicines, or a combination. Your psychiatrist will discuss the options with you.

Can I see a psychiatrist online?

Many consultations, especially follow-ups, work well over a call. Each doctor’s profile shows whether they offer online consultations. In a crisis, call 112 or Tele-MANAS on 14416.

In an emergency, don’t wait for an appointment. Call 108 for an ambulance or 112 for any emergency.
