Also called: stomach, gut and liver specialist

Find a gastroenterologist (stomach and liver specialist)

A gastroenterologist treats the digestive system: the food pipe, stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder and pancreas. They also perform endoscopy and colonoscopy to look inside the gut. Gastroenterologists in India complete an MD in Medicine and then a DM or DNB in Gastroenterology; hepatologists focus on the liver.

Frequently asked questions

What is an endoscopy, and is it painful?

A thin, flexible tube with a camera is passed through the mouth to look at the food pipe, stomach and the start of the small intestine. It is a short procedure done with a throat spray or light sedation, and you will be asked not to eat for some hours beforehand.

Is fatty liver serious?

Fatty liver is common and often improves with weight loss, regular exercise and avoiding alcohol, but it can lead to liver damage over time. A doctor can assess it with blood tests and scans.

Can I take antacids every day?

Not for long without a doctor’s review. Persistent acidity should be checked, and some acid-reducing medicines need supervision when taken for months.

When does constipation need a specialist?

If it is new for you and lasts several weeks, comes with blood, weight loss or pain, or does not improve with more fibre and fluids.

In an emergency, don’t wait for an appointment. Call 108 for an ambulance or 112 for any emergency.
